While Barcelona itself already offers so many different options to fill your vacation itinerary, there are some amazing but less busy spots really close by which are just perfect for day trips from Barcelona. You should definitely escape the busy city for at least one day if your vacation will be long enough. Especially if you’ve been to Barcelona before and have seen all the sights, you should consider spending one day of your vacation somewhere else.
Read on for my four personal favorite day trip from Barcelona!
Best day trips from Barcelona
Sitges is the perfect place to go to on a hot summer day if you want to spend a perfect day at the beach. Of course, you could just stay in the city as there are several different beaches but I can guarantee they’re nothing compared to the beach in Sitges. Don’t get me wrong, the beach in Barcelona is nice and I love going there but it’s it has its downsides. First of all, well…it’s fake. For those who didn’t know, I’m sorry! The city beaches were made artificially for the Olympics in 1992 with sand from Egypt and rented Plan tress from Hawaii. However, it is still nice but the natural beach in Sitges easily beats it: the sand is nicer, there are no rocks and you can walk into the water for several meters and it might just come up to your hips while in Barcelona, for most spots it’s all in or nothing. On top, the Barcelona’s beaches get incredibly crowded in the summer. And yes, Sitges will also be crowded on any summer day but still less. If you’re not a beach person, Sitges is still worth a trip as the city itself is just really nice overall.
3. Costa Brava
Another beautiful destination that is within a few hours from Barcelona and you might have already heard of it because it is a pretty popular vacation destination. Understandable – I wouldn’t mind spending more than a day there. With beautiful beaches and pretty towns, the Costa Brava is a must-see. As there are too many different towns along the coast to talk about all of them, I’ve chosen two: First, the beautiful town of Empuriabrava with its canals and cute colorful houses. It’s perfect to do a boat tour and plus, it also has a super nice beach!
Second, Cadaqués which is a pretty town with lots of pretty white houses and little alleys. Unfortunately, it rained when I went but you can still see how pretty the town is. I’ll definitely be back!
While Girona is only about 45 minutes by train from Barcelona, it is like a totally different world because it’s just so quiet in comparison. Seeing Girona’s pretty, colorful buildings is definitely worth the journey. One of my favorite things to do is take a walk on the old city wall. You will have an amazing view over the entire city and especially the ancient center.
Attention Game of Thrones fans! This is the place for you to go on a day trip from Barcelona! The cathedral in Girona is the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. Even though it was edited slightly, it is still clear that it’s one and the same building. A picture on the stairs with the cathedral in the back will be a great memories and a great way to impress fellow Game of Thrones fanatics.
My personal all time favorite of all of my day trips from Barcelona was the monastery Montserrat. It’s super close to Barcelona but when you get there it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere. In my opinions there are two things that you need to do: have a look at the monastery and hike the mountain. The monastery of Montserrat is built on a mountain in the middle of a stunning scenery.
To reach the highest point of the mountain, Sant Jeromi, you will probably need about 1.5 – 2 hours of you’re going at a normal speed. It might sounds like an awful lot but the trail is really nice and most of the time not even very steep. But I’m not going to lie to you, there are stairs here and there and they’re not a whole lot of fun. But it’s so rewarding when you reach the top of the mountain and enjoy the amazing view!
